Level 3 is not a wall unit on a dryer circuit. It is DC fast charging: an off-board charger that feeds the battery directly, typically 50 to 350 kilowatts, on 480-volt three-phase power. Cars add hundreds of miles in a stop. The electrical and the conduit under the pavement are the actual job.

What Level 3 actually is

The charger is outside the car. The power is DC.

On Level 1 and Level 2, the car’s onboard charger turns AC from the wall into DC for the battery. That onboard box is small, so the charge is slow. Level 3 skips it. A cabinet on the lot converts three-phase AC to DC and sends it straight to the pack. That is why a session is 20 to 40 minutes instead of overnight, and why the gear, the voltage, and the utility conversation are a different trade than hanging a Wall Connector in a garage.

We named the company after this work. Home charging is here too — Level 1 and Level 2 have their own pages — but DC fast is the job that needs a crew who also bores conduit.

Power, not just a pedestal

A 50 kW stall can often land on existing 480-volt service with a dedicated disconnect. 150 kW and 350 kW stalls are a utility problem: transformer capacity, service upgrade, demand charges, and a pad that is not in a flood line. We do the load study and the utility coordination before anyone orders cabinets. Liquid-cooled cables, NACS and CCS, and ADA stall layout are part of the same drawing, not extras on change-order day.

Where this belongs

Property managers usually want two numbers: installed cost, and how many days the lot is torn up. Trenchless conduit is how the second number stays small.

How we put conduit in the ground without tearing up the property

Most electricians trench. That means a saw cut through asphalt or concrete, a ditch through the lawn, and a restoration bill that often rivals the charger itself. We keep directional drilling and missile boring in-house so the electrical crew and the underground crew are the same company — same schedule, same warranty.

Horizontal directional drilling

A compact drill rig stages at one end of the planned path. The operator drills a small-diameter pilot hole under the driveway, sidewalk, parking lot, or landscaping, steered by a locating beacon in the drill head. When the pilot comes out at the far pit, conduit is attached to a reamer and pulled back through the hole. The only disturbed ground is the entry pit and the exit pit — typically a few square feet each.

We use HDD when the run is longer, needs to curve around utilities, or has to stay a designed depth under a finished surface.

Missile boring

For shorter, straight crossings — a driveway, a sidewalk, a parking aisle — a pneumatic piercing tool (the “missile”) is launched from a small pit. Compressed air drives it through the soil in a straight line. Conduit is then pulled or pushed through the hole. Faster and lighter than a full HDD spread, and the right tool when you only need to get under twenty to forty feet of pavement.

If the path is short and straight, missile boring is usually the cleaner, cheaper answer. We will tell you which method actually fits rather than selling the bigger machine.
