Level 2 is the home install that actually works: a dedicated 240-volt circuit, 40 or 48 amps, permitted and inspected, mounted where you park. Overnight, a battery-electric car wakes up full. This is most of the residential work we do.
What Level 2 actually is
Level 2 is AC charging at 240 volts — the same voltage as a dryer or a range. A 40-amp circuit gives you about 7.7 kW; 48 amps about 11.5 kW. That is 25 to 40 miles of range per hour on most cars. Park at 8 p.m., leave at 7 a.m. with a full battery. It is not DC fast charging. It does not need a transformer in the parking lot. It does need a panel that can take the load.
We start with a load calculation, not a wall-unit brochure. A 200-amp service with headroom is a straightforward homerun. A 100-amp mid-century CBS house in Hollywood, or a panel already full of two ACs and a pool heater, is a different conversation — load-managed charger, subpanel, or service upgrade, quoted as its own line. We will not hang a 48-amp circuit on a service that cannot carry it.
A Tesla Wall Connector or a hardwired J1772 unit (ChargePoint, Wallbox, Emporia) is cleaner outdoors and what most inspectors prefer. A NEMA 14-50 receptacle is the right call if you want to keep a portable EVSE or move the charger later. We will say which one fits the car and the wall. We will not upsell a smart charger because it photographs well.

In-house, not subcontracted
Most electricians trench. That means a saw cut through asphalt or concrete, a ditch through the lawn, and a restoration bill that often rivals the charger itself. We keep directional drilling and missile boring in-house so the electrical crew and the underground crew are the same company — same schedule, same warranty.
A compact drill rig stages at one end of the planned path. The operator drills a small-diameter pilot hole under the driveway, sidewalk, parking lot, or landscaping, steered by a locating beacon in the drill head. When the pilot comes out at the far pit, conduit is attached to a reamer and pulled back through the hole. The only disturbed ground is the entry pit and the exit pit — typically a few square feet each.
We use HDD when the run is longer, needs to curve around utilities, or has to stay a designed depth under a finished surface.
For shorter, straight crossings — a driveway, a sidewalk, a parking aisle — a pneumatic piercing tool (the “missile”) is launched from a small pit. Compressed air drives it through the soil in a straight line. Conduit is then pulled or pushed through the hole. Faster and lighter than a full HDD spread, and the right tool when you only need to get under twenty to forty feet of pavement.
If the path is short and straight, missile boring is usually the cleaner, cheaper answer. We will tell you which method actually fits rather than selling the bigger machine.
